Border Collie and Sheep Demonstration
The Squirrels’ Nest FarmSuzanne Long of Murphy, NC will travel from her “Squirrels’ Nest Farm” nestled in the mountains of western North Carolina to the Blairsville Scottish Festival and Highland Games to bring us a demonstration of the herding skills of the Border Collie. There will be several demonstrations during the day and are a fun and informative way to learn more about these beautiful, smart, working dogs.

During the demonstration, she will tell of the background and history of the Border Collie breed and how their instincts and heritage developed into the wonderful working dog we see today. She will put on the demonstrations with a small herd of Dorset sheep and several dogs.

Visiting after the demonstration is encouraged, questions are welcome, and there are opportunities to meet the dogs and sheep close up.

Suzanne also breeds her dogs, which are from championship ABCA registered lines, being careful to socialize each puppy to be ready for its new home and life adventure. She is always interested in your thoughts or questions and welcome visitors. The Squirrels’ Nest Farm website is www.geocities.com/suzlong2/lifewithbordercollies.html
Suzanne along with her dogs, Zeus, Flo, Sukey and Mandy, hope you will make plans to attend this event, and are confident you will find it enjoyable as well as educational.

SCOTTISH HIGHLAND CATTLE
A Centuries Old Breed, Highland Cattle are an ancient breed, having lived for centuries in the rugged Highlands of Scotland. In these extremely harsh conditions only the hardiest and most adaptable animals prospered and survived to produce the breed we know today.

The British Royal family recognizes Highland beef as the finest available and maintains a large herd at Balmoral Castle, near Bremar, Scotland. Scottish Highland cattle are the oldest registered breed with the first herd book established in 1884.

Scottish Highland CattlePART OF AMERICAN HISTORY
Early American cattlemen recognized the natural qualities of the Highland and imported them in late 19th century to improve the blood lines of their herds. Purebred Highlands require little in the way of shelter, feed supplements, or expensive grains to achieve and maintain good health and fitness. They thrive in less than ideal pasture, producing naturally lean and tender beef without the aid of growth stimulants or hormones. Additionally, their long hair insulates them in cold weather, reducing outside waste fat.

THE MODERN HIGHLAND
Today's Highland rancher produces a disease and stress resistant breed that is ideally suited to his needs. Highland cows are long lived animals and have little difficulty calving, even at Scottish Highland Cattlean advanced age. For over 20 years Scottish Highland and Highland crosses have been graded in the top of their respective classes at the prestigious National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado.
